Scuba Diving Holidays In Bonaire
Bonaire is not only stunning, but is very protective of its treasures.
So if you appreciate marine life and support the protection of the diving environment, Bonaire is for you.
Country Description
The Eastern most Island of the Dutch Antilles and nearer
Venezuela than the outer Caribbean Islands. Approximately
30 mils in length, seven miles wide and covering 112
square miles, Bonaire is flanked by another smaller island,
Klein, which sits just off the west coast.
An extremely
environmentally conscious country, Bonaire has a progressive
approach to protecting natural resources. As a result
it was the first of the Dutch-Antilles to create a national
park. Furthermore all of the waters that surround the
islands are designated marine parks, which are actively
policed and managed. Which means sites are occasionally
closes if they become damaged.
Diving Description
The diving of Bonaire is absolutely stunning. The 86 official
sites, 51 of which are accessible from shore promise beautiful
coral formations, turtles and waters teeming with barrel
sponges larger than human beings, frogfish, seahorse's shoals
of snapper and angel fish. Furthermore, thanks to its protective
laws, it is illegal to break the corals, fish with
spears and collect anything under water, and turtles and
their eggs are aggressively protected, the island
promises nothing short of the most beautiful dives. The
reefs all start close to the shore making them extremely
accessible, long boat journeys are simply unnecessary and
promise excellent systems and wall dives.
Dive Sites
Kralendijk Pier
Despite the wealth of gorgeous dives available, Bonaire's
best site is the pier in Kralendijk. You'll need
permission from then harbour master but is worthwhile because
the experience is excellent.
Hilma Hooker
An ex drug running vessel, which was sunk in 1984. It lies
in 29m of water on its side. It is now home to an abundance
of marine life.
Bonaire Klein
It's worth taking the ten-minute boat ride to this
small island for its excellent reefs and walls.
Other info
The Netherlands Antilles National Parks Foundation, a non-profit
making, non-governmental organisation that maintains the
buoys and sets the marine park rules, levies an annual
fee of $10.
