Scuba Diving Holidays In South Africa
Choose between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean for your diving in this most beautiful of African nations.
Country Description
South Africa is a huge country boasting vast areas of
natural beauty, and is flanked by the Indian Ocean on
one side and the Atlantic on the other. Since the end
of apartheid South Africa has worked hard to build its
tourism industry which has resulted in an abundance of
hotels to suit all needs. The country boasts an excellent
travel infrastructure, making it relatively easy to get
about, which is useful when you realise just how different
the country's areas are. The distinct coastal regions
are called, Western Cape, the Garden Route, Kwazulu-Natal
and the Eastern Cape, and each boasts its own unique
character.
Diving Description
As with the countryside, the sea life in South Africa is
stunning with a huge proliferation of fish, and colourful
invertebrates. Shark life features heavily in the seas around
this country so encounters with great whites, ragged tooth
sharks and bull sharks will be on the dive agenda. To get
to the best diving destinations however you have to encounter
the huge swells that break onto the country's beaches.
The calmer seas beyond though offer the promise of excellent
diving.
dive site
The most famous dive sites are Sodwana Bay in the Northeast,
the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay,
Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay and the Protea Banks. All of
which offer excellent diving.
Dyer Island
Dyer Island is famed for its huge seal colony. The seas
surrounding it however hold the promise of face-to-face
encounters with great white sharks when, at certain
times of the year, they come into feed on the island's
seals.
Other info
South Africa was the first country to pass laws to protect
the great white shark. Certain areas have now been
a designated marine reserve, which has meant that only
a few operators can offer great white tours. South
Africa is very westernised, however it has been slow
to adopt diving as a tourist attraction. However some
of the better companies now offer diving holidays,
many of which have wildlife safaris included in the
deal.
