Scuba Diving Holidays In Florida

The Florida coast is famous for its reefs and wrecks - both natural and man-made. Planes and tanks as well as boats are to be found submerged offshore. The best of the natural world and the man-made leisure industry is married in this most exciting of coastlines.

Country Description Boynton Beach and Fort Lauderdale. However the most popular, and best-known destinations are the Florida Keys - a chain of 34 islands that are linked by a single road and bridges. The further you drive away from the mainland the quieter these Keys become, until you hit Key West which is one of the most popular holiday resorts in the US.

Diving Description

All manner of boats, planes and even tanks have been sunk as a part of the artificial reef programme to encourage growth of marine life, and create great tourist attractions around the Florida coastline. The most dived artificial reefs can be found around Fort Lauderdale, and the Keys. However all of the Keys have a surrounding own coral reef system. The archipelago stretches 212 miles along the Florida bank - a geographical ledge that channels warm Gulf Stream water into the Gulf of Mexico. The result is a large reef system. Key Largo is the most popular destinations and has subsequently seen damage being done to the reefs. The weather too has done its fair share of damage with hurricanes presenting a very real problem. Just off this are of coastline lie three of the most spectacular shipwrecks in Florida; Duana, Grove and Bibb.

It is also worth checking out the inland fresh water dives in Florida with the clear waters around the Palm Beach towns where stunning ship wrecks (including Spanish Galleons), awesome reefs and plentiful marine life provide an excellent dive experience.

Boynton Beach

This area offers some of the best diving in the US. Lying just north of Miami it promises a reef system with a variety of sea life, which is richer than the rest of Florida.

Duana, Grove and Bibb

Duane and Bibb are 100-meter USGC cutters that offer excellent dive experiences. Grove is the largest ship to have been purposefully sunk to create an artificial reef. A 155-metre LSD Spiegel, which settled on its side at 40m, it already boasts impressive marine life.

Esso Bonaire, Mizpah and Amarylis.

Modern wrecks which can be found in the inland fresh water waters just north of Palm Beach. There is even a Rolls Royce car!
