Country Description
Dominican Republic makes an excellent tourist destination
thanks to its rich history and numerous places of interest.
Like the oldest church in the New World, or the colonial
building of Zona Colonial in the island’s capital
Santa Domingo.
Beaches here are all excellent and while the National
Parks have little to write home about, The Parque Nacional
Isla Cabritos does at least boast crocodiles, iguanas
and flamingos.
Diving Description
There are two kinds of diving available, Atlantic and Caribbean.
The former is more choppy and prone to hurricanes, which
means the reef isn't so good, although the weather
has resulted in numerous shipwrecks. The latter calmer,
more sheltered and with reefs that are in far better condition.
Marine life however had been decimated by over fishing
and large fish like manta rays and sharks have dwindled
in numbers. Thankfully this is now being rectified with
locals becoming aware of the value of large fish to the
tourist industry. If you are lucky though, you might come
across the islands two species of manatee (Caribbean and
Antillean).
Dive Sites
The South Coast
Although the North does offer shipwreck, the corals and
marine life are far better in the south.
Other info
The islands biggest water based attraction is humpback
whale watching, as the second rarest of all the whales
congregate in the area between January and March. The huge
creatures have a number of breeding grounds around Dominican
Republic with more the 10,000 of them reaching the island's
waters each year.
