Scuba Diving Holidays In Belize
Belize is known for the Belize Barrier Reef - second only in size to the Great Barrier Reef.
The reef boasts wonderful natural treasures including some fantastic slopes, caves and walls for the scuba diver.
Country Description
Belize has one of the most environmentally friendly governments
in the world today. As a result much importance has been
placed on the country's dive destinations. Which
is unsurprising since Belize boasts the second largest
barrier reef in the world. Indeed the Belize Barrier
stretches 185 miles from the Mexican Town of Xcalak in
the north, along the length of Belize and on to Honduras
in the South. Along with the magnificent Belize barrier
Reef, the area also features a number of atolls, including
Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Reef. The
draw for divers has resulted in the growth of a good
tourist industry with resorts emerging in the small islands
dotted along the Belize coast.
Diving Description
For land based diving there are two main islands Ambergris
Caye and Caye Calker, while the old fishing village of
Placencia also boasts a good dive industry. Generally
diving in Belize is dominated by the coral reefs that
have formed into natural caves, slopes, and a numbers
of awesome walls. There are no wrecks in Belize, although
rumours have circulated for years that the government
are going to sink a ship for the purpose of the diving
industry. Life among reefs is plentiful however, with
manta rays, whalesharks, wahoo, stingray, Spanish Mackerel
and a numbers of species of shark often seen. Hell's
Hole along the barrier reef contains several species
of shark.
Dive Sites
Lighthouse Reef
A part of a national park, Lighthouse Reef was made famous
by Jacques Cousteau in 1972 when he held an expedition
in the reef's Blue Hole. The water inside the Blue
Hole drops down top 114m and inside you will find an
astonishing array of limestone columns formed by stalagmites
and stalactites fused together over thousands of years.
Glover's Reef
The most exciting destination in Belize, Glover's
Reef is the most exposed site in the region. Usually only
visited by the largest liveaboards, and difficult to navigate
in bad weather, what the site promises however is pristine
and breathtaking coral stacks.
The Elbow
Often considered to offer the best diving in Belize, The
Elbow is located off Turneffe Atoll. The strong current
brings with it a multitude of fish species, sharks and
even pilot whales and orcas.
Other info
The Dive industry here is geared for the Americans, however
the US-based non profit environmental research group Coral
Cay Conservation has worked hard at increasing Belize's
standing among UK divers.
